Diaspora Insurance was one of the key sponsors of the just-ended annual general meeting (AGM) for one of the Kenya North America Diaspora (K-NAD) savings and credit cooperatives.
The two-day event was held in Rockville, Maryland, with Diaspora Insurance represented by Executive Director, Dr Sibert Mandega, and Jane Kimando, Sales Executive for North America.
Led by Ruth Kinyua and her team of inspired ladies, the K-NAD savings and credit cooperative (SACCO) is one of the biggest SACCOs in the USA, with a membership of more than 1,200.
The theme for the AGM was ‘Arise, Elevate and Inspire’. This encouraged diasporas to rise above our challenges to higher levels and, in the same process, inspire others and the next generation.
The theme was encapsulated by the keynote speaker, Rep. Hulda Momanyi, the Kenyan-born House of Representative for Minnesota.
She is the first Kenyan-born immigrant to be elected to the State legislature in the USA. Rep Momanyi overcame the challenges of being a migrant to be elected into public office, especially at a time when the view on migrants was negative in the USA.

Friday was an education day and covered wide-ranging topics like financial planning, corporate governance and insurance. Diaspora Insurance presented their worldwide funeral insurance product which pays out cash of up to $30,000 immediately to family members in the event of a death.
This product appeals to African diasporas because it extends coverage to their families in Africa. Diaspora Insurance now provides its bespoke products to 20 African nationalities in the diaspora.
The K-NAD SACCO leadership highlighted how Diaspora Insurance’s support played a crucial role in the success of their AGM, allowing them to bring together their members and stakeholders for a productive and engaging meeting.
They also acknowledged Diaspora Insurance’s commitment and dedication to supporting the Kenyan diaspora community in North America.
Diaspora Insurance works with Grand Granite SACCO, another North American SACCO, Kenyan Women in the USA (KWITU) and the Kenyan Community in Ontario (KCO) in Canada.
SACCO’s are cooperatives that offer financial services with the primary focus on mobilising funds and providing affordable loans to members.
The cooperatives are regulated and supervised by the SACCO Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), a principal agency of the government of Kenya.
SACCOs have helped a lot of Kenyans to make significant investments in Kenya including real estate and tourism.
