Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o Cremated in the U.S.—A Powerful Reminder That Beliefs Evolve

As reported by Diaspora Messenger, globally acclaimed Kenyan author and cultural icon Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o was cremated in the United States on May 28, 2025, in line with his personal wishes. While cremation remains uncommon in many African traditions, his decision reflects a deeper truth for many in the diaspora: beliefs are not static—they evolve with time, place, and experience. A memorial service is planned in his honour on June 22, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia, coordinated by the Kenya Diaspora Alliance–USA. His family’s ability to honour both his choice and his legacy is a striking example of what it means to live—and die—with dignity and agency, even far from home.
