The African diaspora community is mourning the untimely loss of Eliud Kipsang, a celebrated Kenyan middle-distance runner and former NCAA collegiate record holder, who passed away in the United States after suffering cardiac arrest.
The tragic incident occurred on June 6 in Washington State, where Kipsang was rushed to hospital and admitted to intensive care. Despite medical intervention, he sadly died on June 10 at just 28 years old.

Kipsang was a standout athlete during his time at the University of Alabama, where he etched his name into the record books with some of the fastest times in NCAA history — including a 1500m run of 3:33.74, ranking among the top five all-time. He also held multiple school records and was a two-time All-American. In 2021, he was named SEC Runner of the Year and helped his team to several conference titles.
Following his graduation, Kipsang signed a professional contract with Adidas Pro and continued to represent Kenya and his alma mater with distinction.

Tributes have poured in from the athletics community, including heartfelt words from Alabama’s track coach, who described Kipsang as more than just a talented athlete — calling him a cherished teammate and friend.
A fundraising campaign has been launched to help return Kipsang’s remains to Kenya so that he can be laid to rest among family and loved ones. At the time of writing, over $8,000 of the $30,000 goal has been raised.
This heart-breaking loss is a reminder of the unexpected turns life can take — especially for those living abroad. Many families are left scrambling emotionally and financially in such moments, often turning to crowdfunding. It underscores why having a plan in place matters — not just for peace of mind, but to honour the dignity of our lives and deaths.
