A GOFUNDME appeal has been launched to raise funds for the repatriation to Zimbabwe of a man who died in Scotland aged 31 last month.
The family of Tanyaradzwa Garfield Magaisa said they wanted to take his body back to Zimbabwe where “he will be laid to rest as was his wish”.
Described as his mother’s favourite child, they said Magaisa’s “death was sudden, and still a shock to us all as he was found dead, peacefully in his sleep on the 30th of September”.
According to the GoFundMe appeal Magaisa struggled to settle in the UK from the time he moved to Scotland aged 11, facing racism and bullying as well as problems with immigration authorities.
“Their childhood was very tough, marred by racism and bullying, which left them feeling isolated and without a support network because the system felt they were not entitled to any support owing to their immigration status,” wrote Mirthfan Hove who organised the fundraiser.
“He (Magaisa) struggled even more after the loss of our father in 2011, Tanyaradzwa Garfield faced immense challenges processing it all.
“To top it all he still had a long pending immigration struggle for the past 20 years leaving him secluded, feeling lost and unable to find and fulfil his purpose.
“It all led to a long battle with depression and mental health issues.”
As of Tuesday, the appeal had raised £930 against a target of £10,000.
“We as a family would like to thank you all for your prayers, generosity and kind words, love and support during this heartbreakingly difficult time,” Hove added.
