AN appeal has been lunched to help raise body repatriation funds for a Zimbabwe-born nurse who died recently in the United States.
Itai Sunguro worked as a nurse for the Pleasant Valley State Prison under the California Correctional Health Care Services.
He however, died suddenly on July 30, leading the launch of a GoFundMe appeal to raise some US$20,000 to help with funeral and body repatriation costs.
Sunguro joined the California Correctional Health Care Services in 2015 and “remained at the institution until his untimely passing”.
“(We) extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Itai Sunguro’s family, loved ones, and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace Itai, you will be greatly missed,” the service said on its website.
“We grieve not only for the loss of an exceptional individual, esteemed colleague, but also, our cherished friend. Itai was a kind, beloved man with a huge infectious smile.”
The GoFundMe appeal had raised $4,600 as of Wednesday.
Meanwhile in a tribute accompanying the appeal, its organiser Gladys Haamankuli said “Itai touched so many lives in many ways”.
“Apart from being a Registered Nurse, he used to be a teacher, a choir master, he helped with church building and as well as a member of the community,” Haamankuli added.
“He has left behind two young sons here in the USA and an elderly mother in Zimbabwe. The funds are needed to help repatriate our friend back to his home in Zimbabwe.
“He will be remembered for being an ever joyful friendly person. Your generous donations will be greatly appreciated.”
