A GOFUNDME appeal has been launched to help with funeral and repatriation costs for a Namibian football player who was stabbed to death in Canada.

Tjijandjeua Gift Tjaveondja, 30, succumbed to injuries sustained during a fight Sunday morning in Edmonton.

Police responded to reports of a stabbing near around 12:15 a.m. and found Tjaveondja with critical injuries. He died a short time later in hospital.

An autopsy confirmed the 30-year-old, who played for the Namibia team in Edmonton, died from a stab wound to the chest.

A GoFundMe appeal has since been launched to help with funeral and body repatriation costs.

“While we are navigating through the pain and shock of losing our precious Gift – such a young healthy young man who was loving and caring,” wrote Pastor Emma Antwi who organised the fundraiser.

“… we humbly request for your donations to help cover his funeral/memorial service expenses and repatriation costs to help send his remains home to give his parents and family an opportunity to pay their last respect and give him a befitting burial.”

The appeal (click here top donate) sought to raise C$15,000.00 and, as of this Tuesday, donations had reached $13,000.00.

Meanwhile, Two men have since been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and assault with a weapon.

Investigators said Tjaveondja did not know either man.

Police believe more people were involved in the altercation that resulted in Tjaveondja’s death.
