The commemoration highlighted the enduring global significance of South African Youth Day and its continued relevance in inspiring youth activism, leadership and social change across generations.

Lord Mayor Choudhry on Youth Empowerment in Birmingham
Addressing the gathering, Councillor Zaker Choudhry praised Birmingham’s cultural diversity and the critical role young people play in shaping inclusive communities.
“It is a pleasure to be with you today at this Youth Day celebration. I would like to begin by thanking the organisers for inviting me to this important occasion.
Today is a celebration of our young people and the important role they play in shaping our future. They bring energy, fresh ideas, creativity and hope. They remind us that the future is full of possibilities, and it is our responsibility to support, encourage and empower them to reach their full potential.
Here in Birmingham, we are proud to be one of the most diverse cities in the United Kingdom. Our strength lies in the many communities that call this city home, including the South African community, whose members continue to make valuable contributions to the social, cultural and economic life of Birmingham.
Events like this bring people together, celebrate our shared values and recognise the talents and achievements of our young people. They strengthen the bonds between our communities and inspire the next generation to become active and responsible citizens.”

Diaspora Insurance Mission and Community Impact
Diaspora Insurance Executive Chairman Jeff Madzingo said the company’s mission extends beyond financial services, focusing on dignity, support and connection for Africans living abroad.
“Diaspora Insurance exists to stand with African families living away from home. We provide more than insurance products — we provide dignity, peace of mind and support during some of life’s most difficult moments.
Our work is about ensuring that when families face loss, they are not left alone with financial and emotional burdens. We exist to bridge that gap, to serve the diaspora community, and to remain closely connected to the people and cultures we come from.”
He added that hosting the Youth Day commemoration reflects Diaspora Insurance’s broader commitment to community engagement, cultural preservation and supporting African diaspora communities in the United Kingdom.

Legacy of the 1976 Soweto Uprising
The event served as a powerful reminder of the legacy of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, when South African students protested against apartheid education policies, a moment that became a defining symbol of resistance and youth activism.
A moment of silence was observed in remembrance of the young lives lost, reinforcing the importance of preserving historical memory and inspiring future generations.
The Birmingham Youth Day commemoration brought together leadership, community voices and youth in a shared reflection on history, resilience and empowerment. Marking 50 Years of Courage, the event reaffirmed the importance of unity, education, and youth leadership in shaping stronger communities both in the United Kingdom and globally.
