Why Malawians Relocate to the Diaspora

The decision to migrate in Malawi has often been a response to a combination of several factors, including economic, social and political and environmental factors such as poverty, landlessness and economic dislocations.

These factors are also often linked to factors such as trade, urbanisation and the growth of administrative sectors, agriculture, land degradation and rural poverty to induce migration, both internal and international.

Body Repatriation for Malawians in the Diaspora

Blantyre and Lilongwe Airports are the airports in Malawi that do receive repatriated bodies.

Cost of repatriating a dead body to Malawi. 

Repatriating a dead body is fairly expensive and much more expensive that repatriating cremated ashes. Flights usually used for repatriating deceased bodies are also more expensive than the alternative of shipping deceased ashes. 

For example the average cost of shipping a body from the UK to Malawi is £3200.

Requirements for repatriating a body to Malawi

  • A valid post mortem report
  • A Death Certificate
  • An Embalment and cremation certificate 
  • Malawi passport or Malawi issued permanent residence document 
  • Certificate of contents declaring contents of coffin (issued by funeral director).
  • Locally listed burial and/or transit permit
  • Embalmers’ (non-contagious) affidavit
  • Non-contagious disease letter from local health authority
  • Photocopy of passport
  • Documents mailed should include a self-addressed, trackable and stamped return envelope

For Cremated remains:

  • Certified copy of death certificate
  • Cremation certificate
  • Hermetically sealed container

Other Essentials for repatriating a body to Malawi. 

  • Note: All documents submitted must be in triplicate (Original and Two Photocopies)
  • Documents mailed should include a self-addressed, trackable and stamped return envelope
  • When in doubt, contact the Namibian Embassy in the repatriating country.

How long does it take to repatriate a body to Malawi?

  • It is difficult to know in advance the  timelines for repatriation to Malawi as repatriation can only take place after all documentation are in place. When the authorisation letter is issued, repatriation can take place anytime from 5 days to 20 days depending on the funeral directors’ logistics arrangements.
