Population & Demographic: With a population of more than 47.6 million people in the 2019 census, Kenya is the 29th most populous country  in the world. Body Repatriation for Kenyans in the Diaspora

The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Kenya has clearance to receive bodies repatriated into the country. 

Cost of repatriating a body to Kenya . 

Repatriation costs vary depending on weight, distance and funeral director fees. The cost of repatriating a body from for example the UK to Kenya is estimated at £3000.

Requirements for repatriating a body to Kenya

  • A valid post mortem report
  • Certified copy of Death Certificate 
  • Export permit to repatriate the dead body to Kenya
  • Infectious  / Non-infectious disease certificate. This has to be issued by healthy authorities in the repatriating country confirm deceased did not die of contagious diseases. 
  • A metal hermetically sealable casket is recommended. 
  • Proof that the deceased was Kenyan, Passport, Birth Certificate or other nationally recognised IDs. 
  • A letter from the director of the funeral home stating how the body was embalmed. This in some countries is known as the embalmment certificate.  
  • Certificate of contents declaring contents of coffin (issued by funeral director)

Other Essentials for repatriating a body to Kenya.

  • Funeral Director in repatriating country is usually engaged to handle outbound logistics of repatriating a body. Funeral director in receiving country should also be engaged to inbound repatriation logistics. 
  • Due to the global covid pandemic, the government of Kenya requires that all repatriations adhere to WHO and AITA guidelines regarding how the dead body is handled. You or your funeral director should obtain clearance from the Kenya Ministry of health.

How long does it take to repatriate a body to Kenya?

  • It is difficult to know in advance the  timelines for repatriation to Kenya as repatriation can only take place after all documentation are in place. When the authorisation letter is issued, repatriation can take place anytime from 5 days to 20 days depending on the funeral directors’ logistics arrangements.

According to a report by the on remittances, Kenya has received close to $3.09 billion in remittances as at March 2021. Along with farming exports and tourism, the funds are a key source of foreign exchange and are tracked by traders. The remarkable growth of remittances has been supported by financial innovations that provided Kenyans in the diaspora more convenient channels for their transactions.

The US remains the largest source of these inflows, accounting for 55.9% of remittances received in March 2021 alone. The other top sources were as per below:
