Martin Lewis, the founder of MoneySavingExpert, offers nuanced guidance on funeral plans. He generally acknowledges that prepaid funeral plans can be a good option for some people but emphasises the importance of understanding the details and limitations.
Key Points Martin Lewis Highlights:
Advantages:
– Prepaid funeral plans can lock in today’s prices, shielding families from future inflation.
– They simplify funeral arrangements, easing the burden on loved ones during emotional times.
– Funds for funeral plans are exempt from inheritance tax as they are not part of your estate.
Disadvantages:
– For standard pre-paid plans, not all costs are covered, such as doctors’ fees, burial plots, and optional extras like flowers. However a unique plan like the Diaspora Funeral Cash Plan which pays out cash does not limit you to what you can use the cash for.
– For standard goods and services plans, if you’re planning to move abroad, a funeral plan might not be practical. This is not so, where it is a cash based plan, where you receive cash anywhere you are in the world, in a currency of your choice.
When They Might Not Be Worth It:
– If paying for one creates debt.
– If you choose a plan that doesn’t align with your preferred arrangements.
– If you expect that the funds in a savings account might be enough and always available when the inevitable happens unexpectedly.
Advice on Choosing a Plan:
Lewis stresses that if you opt for a funeral plan, ensure it is with a provider regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This regulation offers consumer protections and safeguards your investment
